Kaftar Hona Anthracite Deposit

SGC entered into a joint venture agreement with Tajik partners in midsummer 2007 to be the single largest shareholder of the Tajik company Komarob Ltd, which owns the Kaftar Hona anthracite deposit (The eastern sideof the Nazar Aylok Anthracite Deposit).

Nazar Aylok is an anthracite deposit that was discovered in 1940 and explored in 1973. Made up of 12 parallel running anthracite seams this vast deposit stretches east-west along a strike of 13km, and is thought to be one of the richest anthracite deposits in the world. Kaftar-Hona is 244km from Dushanbe and can be mined six months of the year as an open pit operation or all year round if an underground operation or overhead ropeway is developed.

An exploration programme was carried out at Kaftar-Hona with numerous trenches and adits being developed which resulted in 174 million tonnes of resource:

Most importantly, the calorific value of the Kaftar Hona anthracite is very high, up to 8000Kcal/kg, and the ash, sulphur and phosphor contents are extremely low. Also, assessment suggests a low mining strip ratio making the deposit commercially attractive.

In 2007 an aggressive civil engineering programme was carried out to build a 6 meter wide road 60 kilometres to the deposit which was achieved by late summer 2008 together with the construction of an entire mine camp infrastructure, upon which small production was started immediately.
