Mienadu Coal Deposit

In late summer 2007 SGC entered into a joint venture agreement which holds the licence to mine the Mienadu deposit (steaming coal). The deposit is located 268km northeast of Dushanbe, 40km east of Tavil Dara village, 4.5km east of the Mienadu village and sits on mountainous terrain at an altitude of 2850-3000m. Discovered in 1940 by the state geological department, exploration on the deposit was carried out at various times over a period of 52 years, with the most recent work taking place between 1989 and 1992.

The deposit comprises of 4.9 million tonnes of steaming coal proven up and ready to mine and some 650 million tonnes of prognostic coal. Mienadu’s huge potential value lies in the exploration of its enormous prognostic reserves that need to be drilled and analyzed.

On taking over the project over SGC immediately carried out limited scale coal production mining in the proven reserve areas and started building an infrastructure with a pre-fabricated camp/office building from Turkey.

In January 2008 Saddleback began an intensive programme to collect the Mienadu geological data and to create the mining plans. Good progress was made to assist SGC with more understanding of this massive deposit. Research quickly established that Mienadu was better addressed as an exploration project at this stage.
